On the Layout: Toronto Union Station (Part 1)

Toronto Union Station is a massive facility. It has been under renovation for as long as I can remember.   I thought it was time to focus some of my attention on the layout's biggest train station.  My Union Station is kitbashed from two of Walther's Union Station kits.  I built it long before I appreciated the fact that certain glues really don't work well when trying to glue the plastic "glass" to window frames.  The building's windows are big and need an interior.  So, I've decided to spend some of my vacation adding an interior.

The first step in the project was to paint the inside of the station.  I masked off all of the windows and doors and the primed the inside with a gray primer.

While waiting for the primer to dry, I started to build some of the stairwells that I'll put in the Great Hall.  I used the steps from the Walthers Butterfly Style Station Platforms.  I glued two of the stairwells together and then built the walls around the steps to fit.  I added signage to stairwells based on images from inside the real Union Station.

While I was printing signs, I added some TTC signs to the exterior stairwells that lead to Line 1's Union stop.

It was time to get out the airbrush.  I was fortunate to still have a couple bottles of Polly Scale cement flat paint.  This was the color I originally painted the station with.

More to come....
